Modern Custom Home & Retreat (Under Construction)

Sisters, Oregon.

Located 20 minutes northeast of Sisters, Oregon on a remote 40-acre tract of land, the owner knew that when she found the property it would be the perfect spot to create a seasonal retreat that she had always wanted for herself and her extended family. The property was attractive not only for it’s secluded setting, but also its beautiful balance of open sage steppe landscape and mixed conifer forest of ponderosa pines and western juniper, and its dynamic and breathtaking views of the Three Sisters, particularly Middle and North Sister.

Life Design Build was tasked to create an iconic, yet modest design, that captured modern design inspirations from both Scandinavia and Japan, both in the built architecture and landscaping.

The owner further wanted to ensure this would become a lasting heritage property - and with the remote forested landscape, smart wildfire protection measures and material/design selections were paramount to the design criteria. As such, a simple fire-wise material pallet for the project became established, along with a fortress/fire-break approach to separating the structures with the adjacent forest.

Instead of packing the entire program for the development into a singular large home, the property was rather guided by a cluster or “village” approach to site development with multiple smaller, simple buildings that shared a common architectural language, but could each have unique relationships with their surroundings, mountain views, each other, and the unique in-between spaces that they would create.

In total, the retreat will include:

  • Main House: 2,000 sf, 3 bed, 2 bath

  • Garage/Shop: 530 sf, 2-car

  • Fire Pit Gathering Area

  • Pond Accessory Structure: 1,000 sf w/ recreation, fitness and hobby rooms

  • Pond: Not only for decorative and recreation purposes, but also fire suppression

  • Electrical/Utility Shed

  • Well Pump House + Storage Shed

  • Enclosed Fruit Tree Garden
